Water Supply Planning: Groundwater Monitoring Well Network

Principal Investigator: Kelly, Knapp

Project Staff: Hadley, Hlinka, Mannix, Rennels, Roadcap

Project Period: 2014-2016
Sponsors: Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR)

The ISWS, ISGS, and other federal, state, and local agencies have active and inactive monitoring wells throughout the state, primarily for water level data but some for water quality data. From these wells, a cooperative groundwater monitoring well network is being constructed. The distribution, accessibility, and integrity of these network wells are being assessed to determine the adequacy of the monitor of Illinois’ groundwater resources and to help identify where additional long-term monitoring and real-time data are needed. Two new monitoring wells will be installed in bedrock aquifers south of the Sandwich Fault Zone in Kendall County, which has been identified as a critical area which is being inadequately monitored.
