Groundwater Science

Water Supply Planning: Northwest Illinois Region

Principal Investigator: Kelly, Knapp

Project Staff: Abrams, Hadley, Hlinka, Mannix, Meyer, Rennels, Roadcap, Zheng

Project Period: 2014-2016
Sponsors: Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR)

The Northwest Illinois Region includes ten counties: Bureau, Carroll, Henry, Jo Daviess, Lee, Ogle, Rock Island, Stephenson, Whiteside, and Winnebago. Most of the issues in Northwest Illinois are related to groundwater use. Initial work has begun, including water demand forecasting and instrumenting some monitoring wells with transducers and telemetry, but work in this region will not begin in earnest until 2016 due to limitations in staff resources.

Proposed activities are similar to those in the middle Illinois region, and include (1) water demand forecasting; (2) compiling and evaluating existing maps and data, including water level, water use, water chemistry, and aquifer properties data; (3) identifying and instrumenting observation wells; (4) updating hydrogeological information; (5) collecting samples for groundwater chemistry; (6) constructing a groundwater flow model; (7) evaluating streamflow availability for the region’s streams; and (8) evaluating low flow fluctuations on the Rock River.
