The Illinois State Water Survey (ISWS) is currently scanning more than 1,000 publications, brochures, maps, and other documents from its publication catalog. The project, ongoing for more than three years, is now near completion. Once finished, the effort will provide online access to all ISWS reports dating back to the late 1800s, more than a century of ISWS research, data, and other work that used to be available only in paper format.
Many different scanning technologies were used to achieve this goal, including in-house scanning and outside vendors. The project has involved scanning technologies that have evolved greatly over the years. High standards were set from the start to ensure fast downloads and searchability of all documents posted. Almost all documents download easily over a modem connection, and print with sharp graphics and text.
The Water Survey's publication catalog is accessible online. Many publications have been scanned and are available now.
