Sally McConkey, Water Resources Engineer at the Illinois State Water Survey (ISWS), was elected Vice-Chair of the Association of State Floodplain Managers (ASFPM) and began her term in June during the ASFPM 2009 annual meeting.

In this leadership capacity, McConkey will play a role in influencing national flood policy by working with federal agencies and organizations on mitigating flood losses and promoting floodplain management.

ASFPM members take an active role in forging safe recovery in responding to flood disasters. The organization promotes wise floodplain management to reduce flooding problems and seeks to ensure that national flood policy and programs properly address mitigation response, evaluation, reconstruction, and risk reduction related to natural hazards.

McConkey is currently manager of the ISWS Hazard Identification and Mapping Program in the Center for Watershed Science. She will serve as Vice-Chair of ASFPM for up to two years.
