Precipitation Types

The following symbols are used in the "Precipitation Type" section in the map legend to describe the type of precipitation that occurred. This section is included in the daily maps only.

RRain
SSnow
LDrizzle
IPIce pellets (sleet)
SGSnow grains
ICIce crystals
AHail
      Z      denotes freezing precipitation
ZRFreezing rain
ZLFreezing drizzle
      W      denotes showery precipitation
RWRain shower
SWSnow shower
      T      denotes thunder
TRWThunderstorm
Precipitation intensity is denoted by placing, a "+", "–", or nothing after the symbol
+Heavy
 Moderate
Light
For example, S+ is heavy snow, RW- is a light rain shower, TRW is a moderate thunderstorm.
