Precipitation Types
The following symbols are used in the "Precipitation Type" section in the map legend to describe the type of precipitation that occurred. This section is included in the daily maps only.

L | Drizzle |
IP | Ice pellets (sleet) |
SG | Snow grains |
IC | Ice crystals |
A | Hail |
Z denotes freezing precipitation | |
ZR | Freezing rain |
ZL | Freezing drizzle |
W denotes showery precipitation | |
RW | Rain shower |
SW | Snow shower |
T denotes thunder | |
TRW | Thunderstorm |
Precipitation intensity is denoted by placing, a "+", "–", or nothing after the symbol | |
+ | Heavy |
Moderate | |
– | Light |
For example, S+ is heavy snow, RW- is a light rain shower, TRW is a moderate thunderstorm. |
