American Bottoms Region: Water Supply Planning
The Illinois State Water Survey has published a report on the American Bottoms region, which includes portions of St. Clair, Madison, and Monroe counties adjacent to the Mississippi River. The water supply sources for the region primarily consist of the Mississippi River and the connected sand and gravel aquifer deposited and created by the ancient Mississippi River. In general, the aquifer and Mississippi River provide significant amounts of available water for supply. However, in some areas of the region a history of poor industrial waste disposal has led to contamination of some groundwater.
