Bondville Environmental & Atmospheric Research Site

The Bondville Environmental and Atmospheric Research Site, or BEARS, located on a University of Illinois Foundation farm, serves as a vital hub for atmospheric and environmental research. For decades, ISWS has used this site to monitor:

  • air quality,
  • precipitation chemistry,
  • long-term climate data, and
  • meteorological parameters.

BEARS supports unique research on key atmospheric phenomena, including ground-level ozone, aerosols, and solar radiation. The on-site technical team ensures the continuous operation of advanced monitoring equipment, enabling scientists to collect high-quality environmental data that informs studies on climate, air pollution, and agricultural impacts. BEARS has also hosted short-term research projects into areas including public health, wildlife, and environmental engineering.

Agricultural & Environmental Meteorology

Led by Junming Wang, this field of research integrates meteorological and environmental science with cutting-edge tools and models. Researchers focus on evapotranspiration, greenhouse gas emissions, air quality, and gene flow between commercial agricultural and natural ecosystems. This basic and applied research provides valuable data for improving agricultural efficiency and minimizing environmental impacts.
