ISWS’ Coordinated Hazard Assessment and Mapping Program (CHAMP) staff develop hazard mitigation plans tailored to each community we collaborate with. By leveraging maps, historical data, future projections, and expert insights, CHAMP aims to identify the unique risks posed by hazards to your community.
CHAMP staff with specialized expertise use advanced software integrating scientific and engineering knowledge with cutting-edge Geographic Information Systems (GIS) technology. This allows the team to develop localized estimates for hazard-related damages and economic losses to buildings and infrastructure associated with various hazards.
Natural Hazard Mitigation Plans serve as the basis for FEMA funding for community projects aimed at reducing vulnerability to losses from floods and other hazards. Currently, CHAMP creates detailed profiles for 19 different hazards to incorporate into a community’s hazard mitigation plan. Additionally, ISWS staff can offer technical assistance to help implement the projects identified in hazard mitigation plans, ensuring the effective execution of mitigation strategies.
The CHAMP team has collaborated with the University of Illinois Extension, regional planning commissions, and local officials to offer mitigation planning assistance in Illinois counties.
