Water Use Reporting

Each year, high-capacity well users in Illinois’ agricultural, industrial, commercial, and public water sectors are required to report their water withdrawal rates to ISWS’ Illinois Water Inventory Program (IWIP) under Public Act 096-0222. ISWS scientists and national, state, and local agencies and organizations use this information for water supply planning efforts.

Since its founding in 1978, IWIP has sought to streamline access to Illinois’ water quantity data by managing a centralized database of high-capacity wells and intakes. For each facility inventoried, the database includes locations and amounts of water withdrawn from surface and groundwater sources, as well as significant quantities purchased from other facilities.
